KC keeps rolling
KARNS CITY— Don't try to corner Karns City.
The Gremlins' girls soccer team took seven corner kicks Monday night, scored off two of them and narrowly missed a few others while posting a 4-0 District 9 Class AAsemifinal win over Curwensville.
Karns City (17-3-1)is 7-0-1 in its last eight games and will chase its ninth consecutive district title Thursday against Elk County Catholic, a 3-2 winner over Brookville in the other semifinal.
The site and time of that game will be announced today.
"We're playing beautiful soccer right now,"Karns City coach Lisa Castiglione said. "You want to be clicking at the end of the season, be hitting on all cylinders.
"It's playoffs and we're clicking."
The Gremlins have outscored their opponents 33-2 during the past eight games. They've outscored their two playoff foes 11-0 thus far.
Junior midfielder Julieanne Scott and junior forward Michelle Sweeney have been a big part of it.
Scott handles the corner kicks for Karns City and set up Sweeney for a pair of goals Monday night. The first one opened the scoring as Sweeney headed in Scott's first corner kick 12 minutes and 33 seconds into the contest.
Five minutes later, Sweeney headed another Scott corner kick, but this one sailed over the net.
Cristen Futcher netted her fourth goal of the season off a rebound with 14:51 left in the first half and Karns City had a 2-0 lead at intermission.
Scott and Sweeney struck again with 25:47 left in the game. Again, Scott lofted a corner kick. Again, Sweeney headed it into the net.
"They work so well together on that play,"Castiglione said. "Michelle can direct the ball with authority, and the other girls create enough havoc in there that defenders can lose her in the crowd."
Sweeney has 30 goals on the campaign, and at least half have come off Scott's corner kicks.
"All I do is try to loft it high in the air and keep it in bounds,"Scott said. "Michelle does the rest. She knows how to position herself."
"We've just developed a feel for it,"Sweeney said. "It's a tough play to defend."
The Gremlins were hard to defend Monday night. Karns City had 14 shots on goal to Curwensville's three. It had seven corner kicks to the Tides' one.
Sophomore Christina Endlish wrapped up the scoring by rolling a shot past sprawling goalkeeper Rachel Osnewski with 4:43 left in the game.
Karns City eliminated Curwensville in the district championship game last year.
"They have such a powerful team,"Curwensville coach Gary Thorp said. "You try to limit their opportunities, but it's hard to generate any kind of attack against them."
The Tide's best scoring chance occurred 16 minutes into the second half. Midfielder Danielle Struble took a free kick from 30 yards out and sailed it high toward the goal.
Goalkeeper Kiersten Foreback leaped and got her fingertips on the ball, deflecting it off the crossbar and back onto the field of play.
Curwensville (14-6) rarely got anywhere near the Gremlins' net. Meanwhile, Osnewski stopped Allyson Kepple three times on breakaways.
Kepple has 28 goals this season.
"Our goalkeeper played an outstanding game,"Thorp said. "This could have been a lot worse."
The Tide surrendered four goals in a game only one other time this season — in a 7-4 season-opening win over Punxsutawney.
"Their keeper took the angle away from Allyson and just denied her,"Castiglione said. "I thought she played a great game."
