Mars' Glew wins PIAA golf regional
Two weeks ago, Lauren Glew made a slight adjustment to her golf swing.
It wasn't a major overhaul, just some tinkering to get her swing back on the proper plane.
It worked.
Glew, a senior at Mars HighSchool, shot a 3-under par 69 at Toms Run inBlairsville to win the PIAA Western Regional girls golf tournament Monday afternoon.
"I was playing really consistent right off the bat," Glew said. "I only missed two greens today."
Glew started on No. 10 and shot par on the back nine of the Toms Run course. She had three birdies on the front nine to finish 3-under and to punch her ticket for the PIAA Golf Championships at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York next Monday and Tuesday.
"She's been playing well all year," said Mars girls golf coach Bill Pettigrew. "She's been throwing up 34s and 35s all season."
But never has Glew thrown up a sub-70 score for 18 holes — until Monday.
Glew saved a ton of strokes around the green, she said.
"I was behind a bunker and went up and down," Glew said. "When I did that, I knew it was going to be my day."
It was a great day in general for the Glews. Lauren's twin sister, Marissa, also qualified for the state tournament by shooting a 78.
Last year, Marissa placed sixth at state and Lauren missed the cut on a playoff hole.
"I was so upset about that," Lauren said. "I definitely wanted to get back and go to state. Having my sister there, too, it's going to be a lot of fun."
On the boys side, Grove City senior Cameron Peterson advanced to the PIAA Championships with a 3-under 69.
It is the fourth straight year he has advanced to the state tournament.
"Not many people can say that," said Grove City coach Pat Forese.
Derek Forese, who qualified for the state tournament last season, missed the cut this year by one stroke, shooting a 78. He shot a 42 on the front nine, but rallied to shoot par over the final nine holes, but it wasn't enough.
Boys SoccerAaron McGarvey scored two goals and Chris Harmon added the other to lead Karns City to a 3-2 victory over Clarion-Limestone Monday, a win that secured the No. 1 seed in the upcoming District 9 playoffs.Josh Grenninger made 22 saves in net for the Gremlins (15-2), who will host Redbank Valley (15-2) for the KSAC title Thursday.
Girls SoccerAmanda Sharbaugh and P.J. Abels each scored two goals to lead Knoch to a 5-3 win over Highlands.Alex Gordon also scored a goal for the Knights (11-6-1).
