RAINED OUT
Daylong rain caused Game 5 of the NL championship series between St. Louis and the New York Mets to be postponed Monday night. The game was rescheduled for 8:19 p.m. today at Busch Stadium, with Mets lefty Tom Glavine and Jeff Weaver of the Cardinals slated to start. The teams are tied at two games each in the best-of-seven series. Game 6 will be at Shea Stadium in New York on Wednesday night, as scheduled.
SWEET LOU
Lou Piniella agreed Monday to a three-year contract worth around $10 million to manage the Chicago Cubs. Piniella led the 1990 Cincinnati Reds to the World Series championship and replaces Dusty Baker, who was not brought back after a 66-96 season that ended a four-year contract. Piniella spent last season in the Fox broadcast booth and has 19 years of managerial experience with four teams — Tampa Bay, Seattle, the New York Yankees and the Reds. Several teams had sought to hire him for next season.
FIRED
Ken Macha was fired as Oakland manager on Monday, two days after the AL West champions were swept out of the playoffs by Detroit. Macha, who had a 368-280 record in four season with Oakland, had two years left on his contract. The A's became the sixth major league team to let their manager go since the final days of the season. Dusty Baker (Chicago Cubs), Joe Girardi (Florida), Felipe Alou (San Francisco), Frank Robinson (Washington) and Buck Showalter (Texas) are not coming back next year.
HIRED
Boston hired John Farrell as its pitching coach Monday after the staff finished with the fifth worst ERA in the majors last season. The 44-year-old Farrell spent the past five seasons as Cleveland's director of player development. He succeeds Dave Wallace, whose contract was not renewed after Boston finished third in the AL East after eight straight second-place finishes. ... Former major league managers Art Howe, Davey Lopes and Jimy Williams each signed a one-year contract with Philadelphia Monday to join Charlie Manuel's staff.
LEGAL TROUBLES
Dominican authorities were seeking Juan Uribe after issuing an arrest warrant Monday for the Chicago White Sox shortstop in connection with the shooting of two men. Uribe and a bodyguard are suspected of shooting and wounding a Dominican farmer and a captain in the Italian Navy with a pistol and a shotgun when the pair walked too close to Uribe's jeep around midnight Friday, authorities said.
SPEAKING
"I feel terrific about Lou. I think he's a tremendous baseball man and a proven winner from the beginning of his career... I think he's absolutely the perfect choice as we move forward." — Chicago general manager Jim Hendry after Lou Piniella agreed to a 3-year contract worth about $10 million to manage the Cubs on Monday.
