Sailors sink Knights
RIMERSBURG — The Pittsburgh Steelers used a ball-control offense and a punishing defense on their way to winning Super Bowl XL.
The Lakeview football team borrowed a page from that playbook Friday night by dominating on both sides of the ball on its way to a 34-0 victory over Union.
The Sailors rushed for 376 yards and held the Knights to just 16 yards and two first downs.
"You get two first downs ... ," said Union coach Tom Kidder, shaking his head.
While he didn't finish the thought, the meaning was clear. Union wasn't going to win with that offensive output.
Union opened the game by marching to the Lakeview 10-yard line.
However, the drive stalled when Zach Himes was sacked on fourth down at the 25-yard line by defensive lineman Lucas Thomas.
The Lakeview defense tallied five sacks on the night.
A key play on the Knights drive was a 36-yard pass from Himes to Kasey Kriebel on third-and-4 at their own 36.
The pass play proved to be Union's longest offensive play.
With 8:29 remaining before halftime, Lakeview took the lead when fullback Treven Stoops bulled his way into the end zone for a 2-yard touchdown.
Stoops carried the ball 11 times for 81 yards and two scores.
On the ensuing possession, Union gave the ball right back to the Sailors at their own 47 when Cory King recovered the Knights' fumble.
However, Lakeview was unable to capitalize when Josh Holden intercepted a double-reverse pass from Jon Switzer at the Union 5-yard line.
The Sailors did add another score with 20 seconds left before the half when Stoops scored from 1-yard away to give them a 13-0 lead.
The key play of the drive was a fourth-and-9 conversion by quarterback Adam Koontz, who ran around the left end and juked his was to the first down marker.
"(Koontz) is a great athlete," said Lakeview coach Dan York. "Sometimes I call a (bad) play, and he turns it into a great play."
Lakeview opened the second half the same way they ended the first. Switzer took the handoff up the middle and outraced the Union secondary for a 40-yard score.
Switzer had 73 yards rushing on five carries.
Switzer added another score on the next possession when he sprinted 16 yards through the Union defense.
Early in the fourth quarter, Lakeview finished off the scoring when Koontz ran a quarterback bootleg around left end for an 11-yard touchdown.
Koontz carried the ball for 68 yards and threw for 21 yards.
The Sailors' leading rusher was tailback Scott Shilling, who carried the ball 24 times for 139 yards.
"(Kidder) has a great team," said York. "I think he is doing the right things around here."
