Concrete falls on Route 19
MARSHALL TWP, Allegheny County — Chunks of concrete from a bridge fell on Route 19 Thursday night and this morning, prompting police and the state Turnpike Commission to close one lane of Route 19 in each direction and begin an investigation.
No one was injured at around 7:40 p.m. when a piece of concrete fell onto the median of Route 19 directly below the bridge that carries the Turnpike over Route 19.
The Northern Regional Police Department of Allegheny County confirmed more debris fell this morning, but did not know the size of the debris or when it fell.
The state Department of Transportation responded to the scene Thursday night, but the state Turnpike Commission will be handling the investigation, said Jim Struzzi, a PennDOT spokesman.
Police continued to investigate this morning. A spokesman for the state Turnpike Commission was not immediately available for comment.
