Tradition plentiful at North Hills
WESTVIEW — Talk about North Hills and there's no escaping the numbers.
Since 1980, the Indians have won 12 Quad North titles, four WPIAL championships and a state title in 1993. They've sent five players to the NFL and coach Jack McCurry has a record of 239-80-6 in 29 years as head coach.
McCurry said his program has relied on that tradition this year and will do so again Friday against Butler (2-4, 0-2). Kickoff is 7:30 p.m. at Martorelli Stadium.
"Individually, we're not very talented,"McCurry said. "But through hard work as a team and everybody doing what he's supposed to do, we can get the job done.
"I am surprised we've done as well as we have this year, given the inexperience."
The Indians (4-2, 1-1) return only two offensive starters, slotback Michael Rainey-Wiles and lineman Joel Trembulak, and three on defense in safety Andrew Heck, linebacker Ryan Welsh and defensive back Rainey-Wiles.
Matt Timko, a 6-foot-3, 190-pound senior who was injured last year, leads the North Hills ground attack with 461 yards on 72 carries.
"Tradition means a lot around here,"McCurry said. "We talk about it with the kids all the time. Our kids know that when they put on this uniform, they're not only playing for their school and the community, but for all of the players who wore the uniform before them."
The Indians have lost to McKeesport (27-18) and Shaler (14-8). Victories have come against Connellsville (61-14), Penn Hills (19-0), Penn-Trafford (20-0) and Seneca Valley (27-10).
Since surrendering 27 points to McKeesport in its opener, North Hills has allowed a scant 32 points since.
"Again, that's all 11 guys on that unit playing together,"McCurry said. "Heck has been outstanding at safety and Mike Hirt is a sophomore linebacker who we're very pleased with."
North Hills has been using a two-quarterback system effectively. Andy Wyzkoski threw for a season-high 132 yards against Seneca Valley last week and Heck ran for 101 yards against the Raiders, including an 88-yard touchdown run.
"All we know about our quarterbacks is that both will play,"McCurry said. "They're both seniors and they offer different things. Wyzkoski is the thrower, Heck is the runner."
Wyzkoski completed 10 of 14 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders.
The top receiver is senior Brian Wisniewski, with 14 catches for 240 yards.
Rainey-Wiles was held to 28 yards rushing and receiving last week.
"He plays offense, defense and returns kicks for us,"McCurry said of Rainey-Wiles. "We'll line him up at running back, receiver, in the slot, anything to free him up and get him the ball.
"He's a game-breaker who really hasn't had a breakout game yet. Maybe it will come this week."
Butler quarterback Nick Monteleone has had many breakout games in his career, a fact not lost on McCurry.
"He's probably the best player in the league — certainly the best quarterback,"the coach said. "They like to keep the ball in his hands and we'll have our hands full trying to stop him."
The Indians did shut out Penn-Trafford, another team that likes to throw the football, earlier this season.
"We have some experience facing teams that do what they like to do,"McCurry said.
