Franklin Regional running game rumbles past Knights, 48-8
Franklin Regional may have lost a lot from last year's PIAA Class AAA championship team, but this year's group looks to be making a name for itself.
The Panthers scored on their first six possessions and rolled up 304 rushing yards Friday to post a 48-8 Greater Allegheny Conference football victory over Knoch.
Senior running back Lee Howatnek led the way for Franklin Regional (5-1, 2-1), rushing for 156 yards on 19 carries and three touchdowns. His 56-yard scoring run in the second quarter opened up a 28-0 advantage.
The Knights (2-4, 1-3) answered with their only score of the night when Alex Whisler scored from four yards out. Quarterback Zack Gross connected with Will VanBeek for the conversion pass to make it a 28-8 contest.
The touchdown was the Knights' first score in almost 10 quarters. Their last score came in the fourth quarter in a 22-7 victory over Greensburg Salem Sept. 15.
Howatnek scored on the Panthers' next possession, a 4-yard run with 59 seconds left before the break to send the Panthers on their way.
Whisler led Knoch with 56 yards on 12 carries.
The Knights play at Laurel Highlands next Friday.
Fairview 26, Grove City 13 — Justin Haugh threw a 15-yard touchdown pass to Drew Bestwick and Chris Clark added a 16-yard scoring run, both in the fourth quarter, but the Eagles (3-3) fell short.Clark finished the game with 70 yards on 16 carries and Haugh completed eight of 12 passes for 94 yards, but was picked off twice. Bestwick caught three passes for 57 yards.Fairview (5-1) received three touchdown passes from Gary Corbin, who also threw for 98 yards and rushed for 110 more.
Union 23, A-CValley 20 — The Golden Knights (2-4, 1-4) trailed entering the fourth quarter, but rallied to victory on an 8-yard scoring run by Colby Davis, who ran for 100 yards in the game, and Zach Himes' 15-yard touchdown pass to Brett Moore.Mike Himes scored all three touchdowns for A-CValley (0-6), including a 60-yard punt return and 64-yard kickoff return.
Riverside 27, Summit Academy 8 — Jake Wickline had 24 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown to lead Riverside past Summit Academy (3-3). Grove City 3, Maplewood 0 — Samantha Lawrence, Christie Allison and Rochelle Bonner each tallied a goal to lead the Eagles to the victory Thursday.Ashlee Shoop earned the shutout in net. The junior varsity team also prevailed by a 2-1 score.
