Warriors wary of Bald Eagle

Moniteau wide receiver Josh Loos rumbles for some nice yardage against Keystone last week after hauling in a pass from quarterback Tyler Armagost. With Loos moving to wide receiver, the Warriors offense has hit a new plateau.
Moniteau's mission Friday is not to overlook Eagles

Bald Eagle may be flying into town under the radar, but Moniteau football coach Steve Wilson isn't fooled.

The Eagles (2-3) are taking a two and a half-hour bus ride from Central Pennsylvania to face the unbeaten Warriors in a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday night.

"They won't be intimidated by us,"Wilson said. "They've played much better competition than we have."

Bald Eagle has defeated Lewistown (13-6) and Bishop Guilfoyle (21-20). Its losses are to Penns Valley, Bellewood and Tyrone — teams with a combined record of 12-3.

"Moniteau is just another top-level team we have to play,"first-year Bald Eagle coach John Bathurst admitted.

Moniteau traveled to Bald Eagle last year and posted a 21-6 victory. The Warriors face fellow unbeaten Karns City next week in a showdown for the conference lead.

If the Warriors win Friday, it will mark just the second 6-0 start in the program's history. The 1959 team won its first eight games before finishing 8-0-1.

Wilson has guarded against his team looking ahead to that game, but has seen no signs of it.

"It's my job not to let that happen,"Wilson said. "The kids have stayed focused on the task at hand. I haven't heard any talk about Karns City at all. It's been all Bald Eagle.

"The other games will come in time."

Bald Eagle likes to run the football, as evidenced by senior Brian Kochik getting 33 carries for 167 yards in the win over Bishop Guilfoyle last week.

Senior quarterback Ryan MacNamara threw only 12 times in that victory.

"That was a one-point game, so it gives you an idea how often we throw the ball,"Bathurst said. "Ryan is a senior, but only a first-year football player.

"He's a tremendous baseball player and wrestler. His athleticism has taken him a long way on the football field this year."

Senior wide receiver Duane Viehborfer is MacNamara's favorite target. The Eagles return only one starter on their offensive line:Brian Beals, a 6-foot-2, 245-pound tackle.

Bald Eagle will face a Moniteau defense that plays a 35 and blitzes from different directions. The Warriors have accumulated 24 quarterback sacks through five games, Aaron Randall leading the way with six.

"We're not familiar with that defense because nobody plays it in our area,"Bathurst said. "It's going to present a challenge for our line."

Wilson likes the idea of Bald Eagle playing a physical, running-style offense.

"This game should help prepare us for Karns City, Redbank Valley, Clarion ... the Murderer's Row part of our schedule coming up," he said.

Defensively, Bald Eagle is led by a pair of linebackers in Kochik and junior Justin Koleno. The latter has two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and a blocked punt this season.

"He's one of those kids who is always around the football,"Bathurst said.

In three starts at quarterback thus far, Moniteau sophomore Tyler Armagost has thrown for 424 yards, seven touchdowns and no interceptions, including 127 yards and three TDs in last week's 34-21 win over Keystone.

Former starting quarterback Josh Loos had two catches for 79 yards at receiver last week and had a 50-yard touchdown catch wiped out by a penalty.

"We're trying to create mismatches in coverages and they were trying to cover Josh with a linebacker last week,"Wilson said. "Josh's speed gives us another deep threat to go with Adam Pry.

"Last week was Tyler's best game yet. He's making excellent decisions and he's throwing some lasers in there."

Pry has 10 catches for 176 yards. Adam Cousins leads the Warrior ground game with 364 yards and nine touchdowns.
