2 QB tandem lifts NA over SV

Seneca Valley receiver Shawn Eagle picks up a first down Friday in North Allegheny's 27-13 victory over the Raiders.

JACKSON TWP — North Allegheny decided to play two quarterbacks against Seneca Valley.

And both of them had a hand in defeating the Raiders.

Sophomore Mike Locke completed only three passes, but all three went for second-quarter touchdowns to turn a 6-0 deficit into a 21-6 halftime lead for the Tigers.

With NA holding a 21-13 advantage midway through the final period, junior quarterback Geoff Greco led the Tigers on a 50-yard drive for the clinching score.

Greco rushed the ball five times on the drive for 54 yards, including an 11-yard touchdown with 2:41 left in the game.

The Tigers (3-2, 1-0) missed the extra point, but held on for a 27-13 Northern Five Conference victory to spoil SV's homecoming at NexTier Stadium.

The platooning of the quarterbacks caught the Raiders by surprise.

"I have to give credit to their coaching staff," said Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle. "They showed us some things in the first half that we weren't prepared for. And they beat us with them."

Locke saw his first game action since playing in blowouts over Bethel Park and Latrobe the first two weeks of the season.

"We've been rotating (Locke and Greco) back and forth in practice," said NA coach Art Walker Jr. "You don't just want to throw a sophomore out there."

Greco started the game, but Locke made his presence felt on the Tigers' second drive.

Facing a third-and-goal from SV's 12-yard line, the sophomore dropped back and hit a wide-open Tim Lotz in the left flat. The senior running back scored easily.

On NA's next drive, Locke hooked up with tight end Tom Keiser on a third-and-8 play from the Tigers' own 42.

Keiser caught the ball for a first down, but then broke three tackles down the right sideline for a 58-yard scoring play.

Down 14-6, the Raiders began the ensuing drive at their own 26-yard line with 1:01 remaining before halftime.

After quarterback Ted Pynos passed to wideouts Chris Lewis and Shaine Patsilevas, which moved the ball to midfield, the Tigers' Zack Watts sacked Pynos and forced a fumble that NA's Kyle Butson recovered on the Raiders' 20.

Two plays later, it was 21-6 after Locke once again found Lotz wide open for a touchdown with four seconds remaining in the half.

"We lost the last two weeks, so there was no way we were sitting on the ball," Walker said. "Our plan was to take two shots at the end zone and then kick a field goal."

The Raiders (3-2, 1-0) did intercept Locke on back-to-back possessions in the fourth quarter, once by Derek Peluso in SV's own end zone and the other by Patsilevas, after which Seneca Valley made it 21-13 on a 1-yard run by Pynos.

But Greco's legs took over the next drive. He ended as the game's leading rusher with 84 yards on 13 carries.

NA's final drive chewed 3:57 off the clock.

On the other side of the field, the Raiders never were able to get the ground game going with James Daniels.

The junior, who entered the game averaging 126 yards per contest, tallied only 27 yards on 17 carries, including a 1-yard score that capped SV's 17-play scoring drive in the first quarter.

Pynos completed 16 of 29 passes for 173 yards.
