Seneca, Golden Tornado golfers make section meet
Seneca Valley's Andrew Tang shot a 76 to lead several Butler County golfers who advanced at the WPIAL section qualifier golf tournament at Butler Country Club Monday.
His teammates, Kirk Pappas and Matt Vogt, each shot a 79 to also qualify.
Butler will send two golfers to the section tournament, which will be held Oct. 3 at Cranberry Highlands Golf Course.
CollinRandall shot an 80 and Matt Maloy had an 81 to advance.
The cut was 81.
Grant Martens of North Allegheny was the medalist, firing a 73.
Moniteau finished 12th out of 31 teams at the District 9 Tournament at Pinecrest Golf Course in Jefferson County Monday.The Warriors sent three golfers to compete, Devin Christie (79), Erik Fort (84) and Cody Slater (101). Christie finished 12th out of 93 golfers and will advance to the second round, which will be held Saturday at Pinecrest.
Grove City captured the eight-team Region 2 match Monday and wrapped up the points title as well at the Grove City Country Club.Grove City, led by Zack Nesbitt's 73, finished first Monday with a score of 313, five strokes ahead of Lakeview.Slippery Rock placed sixth with a score of 342 and finished fifth in the five-match points standings.Nick Cress and Sean LeFebvre each had an 84 to lead the Rockets.By averaging in the top 16 individually over the weekly Region 2 matches this year, Nesbitt, Cameron Peterson, Derek Forese and Steve Deyarmin of Grove City and Jeff Tracy of Slippery Rock will all advance to the District 10 Tournament, which will be held Oct. 10 at Grove City Country Club.The top eight will move on to the region tournament at Tom's Run in Blairsville. At the WPIAL Class AAA doubles competition at North Allegheny, Butler's top two teams won first-round matches before falling in the second round.Courtney Kerr and Madison Kerr defeated Seneca Valley's Nicole Lucey and Sarah Sharrar 10-6 before losing to Hampton's Vanessa Steiner and Sara Longo 10-1.Maggie McGinnis and Angela Byrns defeated Katrina Erdal and Erin Flynn 11-9.
