SRU soccer squads swept

Lock Haven scored a goal in the second minute of overtime action Sunday to hand the 13th-ranked Slippery Rock University women's soccer team a 1-0 loss in PSAC-West action.

The Rock (7-2-1, 5-1) remain atop the conference standings with 15 points, three more the second-place Indiana (Pa.) and in good position to earn a fourth successive trip to conference post-season competition.

The Rock outshot Lock Haven 21-12 while both teams had eight shots on goal. .

Despite outshooting Lock Haven 23-7, SRU fell to the Bald Eagles 3-0 on Sunday at James W. Egli Field.Both teams are 3-3.

Anastasia Urbanik recorded 49 kills and 11 blocks in three matches over the weekend to lead The Rock to PSAC cross-over victories.The Rock (15-3), enjoying its best start since 1993 (17-2), defeated Shippensburg 3-0 on Friday, won 3-1 over West Chester and 3-0 over East Stroudsburg Saturday.

Jeff Weiss placed fourth in the men's individual race with a time of 25 minutes, 59 seconds on the 5.2-mile course at the Spike Shoe Invitational Saturday at Penn State University.Holly Whoolery led the SRU women's squad with a 13th-place finish with a time of 22:12 on the 6,000-meter course.The men's team placed 12th out of 24 teams, the women were 11th out of 25.

Despite 373 total yards — including 200 yards rushing — and 21 first downs, Grove City College dropped a 29-18 President's Athletic Conference decision to host Waynesburg Saturday.Grove City (0-3, 0-2) led 6-0 following a 15-yard scoring run by freshman Matt Weaver, who finished the game with 56 yards on five carries and four receptions for 45 yards.Trailing 20-6, Fombell native Matt Weil scored on a 3-yard run. Following a Waynesburg score, freshman quarterback Andrew DiDonato threw a 9-yard touchdown pass to Jay Yanak.Weil finished with 120 yards on 20 carries.
