Miscues can't stop Gremins
KNOX — Karns City remains unbeaten on the season in spite of itself.
The Gremlins had several good scoring chances stopped deep in Keystone territory, but penalties or turnovers prevented the Gremlins from posting any points on those drives.
Despite the mistakes, Karns City improved to 4-0 on the season and 2-0 in the KSAC as it eked out a 26-21 win over conference rival Keystone Friday night.
"Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes," Karns City coach Ed Conto said. "We could have been up 31-0 if it weren't for the mistakes. We are working on penalties in practice, but they are still making them."
Karns City took the opening kickoff and marched to Keystone's 5-yard line, but a fumble ended the drive. The Gremlins also had a Josh Callender 43-yard touchdown in the second half called back on a holding penalty Trailing in the second half, the Gremlins threw an interception deep in Keystone territory and the penalties continued to mount.
"We can't keep doing this," Conto said. "If you keep teetering on the edge, you will fall off."
But Karns City didn't fall off the edge as it scored two touchdowns within three minutes in the fourth quarter for another come-from-behind win.
Trailing 21-14 midway through the fourth quarter, quarterback Matt Endlish hooked up with Matt McConnell to pull the Gremlins within one. But Keystone kept the Gremlins down one point when it blocked the extra point.
Trailing by one, Karns City's defense responded.
On Keystone's ensuing possession, Roy Beham sacked Keystone quarterback Ben Black for a 6-yard loss on third down to force the Panthers to punt from their own 15-yard line. Beham followed up the next play by getting a hand on the punt and the ball rolled out of bounds at Keystone's 14-yard line with 4:35 remaining.
Three plays later, Endlish scored the winning touchdown from 10 yards out.
Keystone coach Jason Nellis wasn't pleased with how many opportunities Karns City had deep inside its territory.
"The whole fourth quarter was played from the 35 in," he said. "You can only stop them so many times from the 35 in."
In the second half, Karns City began six drives on Keystone's half of the field.
Beham not only made his presence known on defense, he rushed for 125 yards, including a 36-yard touchdown.
The Panthers rushed for 12 yards on 21 attempts, but Black threw for 200 yards and two touchdowns.
