Interception return can't save Summit Academy

Leonard Brown returned an interception 100 yards for a touchdown and the Summit Academy football team outgained Shady Side Academy by nearly 100 yards, but the Knights fell, 18-14, Saturday.

Penalties doomed Summit (2-1). The Knights were whistled for 18 penalties for 169 yards and had two touchdowns called back because of infractions.

The defenses ruled the first half. After the interception return for a touchdown by Brown, Shady Side scored on a 29-yard fumble return when Zak Klimvex wrestled the ball out of the hands of Summit quarterback Stephen Grandison and scored to give Shady Side an 8-6 lead.

Summit trailed 16-6 at the break after Vince Miller rumbled 40 yards for the touchdown.

Grandison hit DeAndre Rodgers with a 16-yard scoring pass in the third quarter to close the gap to 16-14, but the Knights couldn't rally for the win.

Shady Side's safety came on a deliberate snap out of the end zone by Summit in the fourth quarter.

Grandison finished 12-of-22 for 192 yards.

Dan Rooney, the grandson of the Steelers team president, was 5-of-15 for 76 yards, but also threw three interceptions for Shady Side.
