Freeport readies for test

Grove City High wingback Cody Redfoot looks for some running room in the season opener against Slippery Rock. The Eagles are looking for answers following a 12-0 loss to Corry.
Yellowjackets face powerful Valley team

Having faced a tough Allegheny Conference foe in Kittanning last week, now host Freeport will turn its sights to Valley.

Kittanning defeated the Yellowjackets 34-14 with Freeport (1-1, 1-1) scoring twice in the fourth quarter on a pair of Cameron Betush runs. He finished with 121 yards on 10 carries.

Valley (2-0, 2-0) is coming off a 58-0 blanking over Deer Lakes, this after a 49-6 win over West Shamokin in Week 1.

"We have to rebound from last week," said Freeport coach Bill Dillen. "There are some things we have to look at. They have a lot of talent at the skill positions. We gave them some problems last year (a 25-14 Yellowjackets loss)."

Leading the Vikings this year has been senior running back Darwin Banks, who has scored nine touchdowns in two weeks.

Banks scored five last week against the Lancers, including a 77-yard punt return for a score. He has rushed for 252 yards on just 18 carries this year.

The team also has top-flight caliber receivers in Division I prospect Toney Clemons plus Madison Harvey and quarterback Jorel Burrell.

Freeport will play host to the Vikings at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Wilmington (2-0) at Grove City (1-1), 7 p.m. Friday — Several days of film study confirmed what Grove City High School football coach Jeff Bell knew shortly after his team's 12-0 loss toCorry Friday"We just got outhustled," Bell said. "I said after the game that they didn't do anything unexpected. It was just poor execution on our part, if you want to call it that."No matter what it is called, it was an ugly loss for an Eagles' team that has playoff aspirations. The only consolation is the fact that it was a non-region defeat. There will be no more room for error Friday night when Grove City hosts Wilmington and the powerful Greyhounds in the region opener.Bell, though, is hopeful that the loss toCorry serves as a big wake-up call for his talented team."Honestly, they are better than they were last year," Bell said. "It's definitely going to be a challenge."The Eagles, who got 150 yards rushing from fullback Chris Clark and 141 more yards from wingback Dwayne Martin in the season opener, were held to fewer than 100 yards of offense by Corry.

Union (1-1) at Keystone (1-1), 7 p.m. Friday — Reality set back in for the Golden Knights last week against Redbank Valley. After ending a 30-game losing streak the week before with a 6-0 win over Cambridge Springs, Union fell to Redbank 49-20.Still, there were good things from the Golden Knights.Colby Davis, Matt Knight and Kasey Kriebel each scored on touchdown runs for Union, which led 8-0 early in the game following Davis' touchdown run.Davis finished with 53 yards on 10 carries.

Shady Side Academy (0-2) at Summit Academy (2-0), 12:30 p.m. Saturday — The Indians are coming off a 34-14 loss to Ford City after starting the season with a loss to Freeport.Shady Side quarterback Dan Rooney threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Remington Jackson and Vince Miller added a 40-yard scoring run to account for the Indians' scores. The Knights continued their early success with another Tri-County North victory over Neshannock 18-15 last Saturday after a 12-0 victory over Union-New Castle to open the season.Stephen Grandison threw for a touchdown to Leonard Brown and returned an interception 80 yards for another while David Lawrence added a 5-yard touchdown run to key the Knights' attack.
