Butler honoring hometown heroes
Butler will conduct its third annual Hometown Heroes program prior to Friday's football game against Fox Chapel at Art Bernardi Stadium.
Tom Brown, Andy Hilliard, Harry Leyland, Rudy Corona, George "Mike" Kelly and George "Red"Slater will be honored on the field during pre-game ceremonies at 7 p.m.
• Brown is a 1939 Butler graduate who played running back, linebacker and defensive end for the Golden Tornado. He went on to play at William &Mary College and played offensive end and linebacker for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1942-43.
Paul "Red"Uram is presenting Brown with his award.
• Corona graduated from Johnstown High School in 1947. He graduated from Slippery Rock State College in 1956 and was that school's first athletic trainer. He went on to become Butler's first athletic trainer and worked under coaches A.G. Capezzuti and Art Bernardi.
He also became the first certified athletic trainer at Seneca Valley, Grove City High School and Butler County Community College. Dick Hartung will accept the award for Corona, who cannot attend Friday's ceremony. Kelly will present the award.
• Hilliard is a 1962 Butler graduate and a 1969 Point Park College graduate. He has handled equipment for the Butler football program under coaches Tim Nunes, Mark Farabee and Gary Cathell.
Also a certified basketball official, he has been a volunteer baseball and basketball coach in the Butler area for years. Kevin Vogel will present Hilliard with his award.
• Kelly is a 1966 Butler graduate and a two-way lineman for the Golden Tornado and the University of Notre Dame, where he graduated from in 1970. He coached the Penn Street Cardinals of the Butler Area Midget Football League for 18 years.
Also a radio and TV broadcaster of Butler football, Kelly will be presented his award by Bernardi.
• Leyland is a 1948 Butler graduate and has coached for 50 years in the Butler Area Midget Football League. He has also volunteered his services as head coach of the Butler Catholic basketball program.
Currently treasurer of the Butler Cubs Association, Leyland will be presented his award by his son, Hank Leyland.
• Slater is a 1945 Butler graduate who played semi-pro football for the Butler Cubs. Involved in coaching for 43 years, he is currently the head coach of Center Township in the Butler Area Midget Football League.
Currently president of the BAMFL, Slater will be presented his award by Gary Slater.
