Douglas C. Garvin

Garvin

While Douglas Cartwright Garvin spent most days working, he never needed an excuse to celebrate the lives of his friends and family. He took pleasure in traveling to Europe, showing horses, enjoying a good meal and savoring a glass of aged scotch.

He died suddenly but peacefully at his home in West Chester, Ohio, on Thursday, as his loyal Doberman Pinscher, Madison, slept by his side. He was 51.

Born in Chicago on June 9, 1955, to Stefan Juan Garvin and the late Jeanne Cartwright Garvin, he grew up in Indianapolis, Ind., and in Haverford, Pa. He attended Episcopal Academy in Merion, Pa., through eighth grade and high school at Hebron Academy in Hebron, Maine, where he graduated in 1973.

In 1977, he earned a BA in metallurgical engineering from Lafayette College in Easton, Pa., where he was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity. In 1980, he married Debra Kay Leighton in Butler, Pa., and in 1984, they had a daughter, Krystal Jeanne Garvin.

Starting as an assistant metallurgist in 1977, he worked at AK Steel, formerly Armco Steel, for 29 years in Butler; Zanesville, Ohio; Coshocton, Ohio, and Middletown, Ohio. At his death, he was director of sales and customer service of the stainless and electrical steel division at AK Steel's headquarters in Middletown.

He worked at the Butler plant from 1977 to 1995. He was general manager for materials management when he left to become general manager of the plant in Zanesville. He later was the general manager of the plant in Coshocton.

Along with his wife, Debra, survivors include his daughter, Krystal of New York City, his brother, Richard Cartwright Garvin of Strafford, Pa., and his father, Stefan Juan Garvin of Media, Pa.
