Weekend crashes kill 2 on Armstrong County roads
An elderly woman and a teenage boy were killed in separate weekend crashes on Armstrong County roads, authorities said.
Marilyn Strum, 71, of North Apollo was on her way to church around 10 a.m. Sunday when she pulled her car from a side street onto Route 56 in Kiskiminitas Township.
The car crossed into the path of a pickup truck that was towing a utility trailer containing two all-terrain vehicles, state police said.
The pickup broadsided Strum's vehicle, slamming into the car's front passenger side.
Strum was pronounced dead at the scene. Armstrong County Coroner Robert Bower said she died of head and chest injuries.
Meanwhile, Jessie Carnahan, 17, of Kittanning died of injuries suffered in a head-on crash late Saturday night on Route 85 in Rural Valley, state police said.
Troopers said Carnahan, a student at Lenape Technology School in Manor Township, was traveling west about 11:15 p.m. when for an unknown reason his 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier crossed the center line and collided with an eastbound 2002 Saturn sedan.
The teen, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken by ambulance to ACMH Hospital in Kittanning where he was pronounced dead at 12:30 a.m. Sunday.
Carnahan died of head and chest injuries, Bower said.
Both crashes were ruled accidental, and autopsies were not conducted.
