River City Brass Band opens series
Butler County Community College's Succop Theatre will begin its 2006-07 Performing Arts Series with The River City Brass Band on Sept. 16. The season opener is one of 10 performances through May. This year marks the fifth season of the Performing Arts Series.
• The River City Brass Band will kick off the season on Sept. 16. Acclaimed as one of the best bands in the country, RCBB has delighted audiences across the country and around the world. This performance features accompaniment by local high school musicians.
• Dan Kamin will perform "Funny Bones," a tribute to Charlie Chaplin, on Oct. 7. Author of the acclaimed book "Chaplin's One-Man Show," Kamin has earned the reputation as the world's foremost authority on Chaplin's comic body language. His career highlights include training Robert Downey Jr. for the film Chaplin.
• Cathie Ryan will perform "A Celebration of Celtic Music" on Nov. 4. Since her acclaimed seven-year tenure as lead singer of Cherish the Ladies, Ryan has established herself as one of Celtic Music's most popular and enduring singer-song writers.
• The National Players will present William Shakespeare's "Othello" on Nov. 11. This tragic story about love, deceit, and murder will come to life as the country's oldest touring theater company, The National Players, take the stage.
• The North Pittsburgh Philharmonic will perform its Annual Holiday Concert on Dec. 15. Under the direction of Roger Tabler, the North Pittsburgh Philharmonic will perform traditional carols and classical favorites to kick off the holiday season. This performance will be sponsored by Armstrong.
• The comedy trio Modern Man, better known as David Buskin, Rob Carlson, and George Wurzbach, will perform on Feb. 2. The group has been described as a cross between Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Marx Brothers. This hilarious trio will take on everything from pop music to politics.
• Celebrated Chinese dancer Yu Wei will perform on Feb. 17. Drawing from traditional Chinese dance, as well as classical, folk, western ballet and modern dance, Yu Wei combines nature-inspired choreography with traditional costumes and music to create a powerful, artistic performance.
• The National Players return once again to perform Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of being Earnest" on March 24. As one of the most celebrated plays, "Earnest" is regarded by many critics and scholars as being the wittiest play in the English language.
• Anthony Zerbe will perform "It's All Done With Mirrors," a one-man tribute to the poetry of e. e. cummings, on April 14. Zerbe, a film and television star, moves through a parade of characters, accents, and dazzling word play capturing cummings' favorite subjects from Paris to first lovers.
• The Performing Arts Series concludes with the Slippery Rock University Jazz Band & Butler Tornado Big Band on May 5. From big band classics to the latest compositions, many talented students will perform for this Armstrong sponsored event.
In addition to the regular Performing Arts Series, a special gala performance of "Carmen Jones" will be held at 8 p.m. on Nov. 10. This new fully staged production of "Carmen Jones," Oscar Hammerstein's interpretation of "Carmen," will be presented by Opera Theatre Pittsburgh. A reception in the AK Steel lobby will follow the performance. Tickets are $25 before the day of the show. At the door, students will pay $10, and season tickets holders will pay $18.
The Succop Theatre is in the Science and Technology Building on BC3's main campus.
All performances begin at 8 p.m. with reserved seating available.
