Eagle Amateur slated Sunday

The 12th annual Butler Eagle Amateur Open golf tournament takes place Sunday at Lake Arthur Country Club.

Tee times thus far include 125 golfers, though committee member Bill Black is accepting entries through Saturday night.

"The numbers are down compared to our previous tournaments at Lake Arthur,"Black said. "I'm not sure why, but we do always seem to get a lot of late entries."

The Eagle Amateur had fields of 174 and 182 golfers, respectively, during its two most recent appearances at Lake Arthur.

Last year's event drew a record 184 golfers at Oakview and was won by Doug Knox of Slippery Rock.

Recently named girls volleyball coach at A-CValley High School, Knox is not playing in this year's event.

The Eagle Amateur, an 18-hole single-day tournament designed to crown the best amateur golfer in Butler County, has had 10 different champions in as many years.

Those winners include Jim Hepler, Black, Dave Hungerman, Sean Swidzinski, Greg Minda, Chuck Young, Mark Young, Chris Marron, Mike Toubakaris and Knox.

Hepler, Black, Chuck and Mark Young are among the field of 125 registered to play Sunday.

"We could have a different winner again this year,"Black said. "Rob Voltz and Dave Ruffaner have been playing outstanding golf of late and Chuddy Carless just won the Oakview club championship.

"Really, anybody in the championship flight is capable of a round good enough to win."

The tournament features a championship, first, second and third flight. Women are welcome to play as well, though Sharon Goncz is the only one signed up thus far.

"They can play from the ladies tees and we'll place them in the proper flight for their handicap," Black said. "It'd be great to get more women involved in this tournament.

"We've got 40 to 50 seniors (age 50-over) signed up, so that division will be competitive."

Besides Knox, flight winners last year were John Plunkard, Pete Brough and Dave Krason.

"It will probably take a score 2- or 3-under par to win this year,"Black said. "The course won't be set up too tough."

Black said numerous tee spots remain open for the 7:45 a.m. shift. There are 19 foursomes teeing off at 1:45 p.m.

"We can still accommodate people who want to play," he said.

Entry fee is $70 and includes green fees, cart, Skins game and prizes. Call Black at 724-283-8656 for details.
