SIGNEDCleveland's Cliff Lee signed a $14 million, three-year contract extension with the club Tuesday, another long-term commitment by the Indians to a young, proven player. In 99 career starts, the 27-year old is 44-25 with a 4.47 ERA. This year, Lee is 9-8 with a 4.75 ERA in a team-high 33 starts.

BIG APPLE RETURNNew York beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 Tuesday night to ruin the homecoming of former Mets catcher Mike Piazza. Piazza went 1-for-4 in his first game at Shea Stadium since he signed with the Padres in the offseason. SLUGGINGCincinnati matched a season-high with 17 hits in beating St. Louis 10-3 on Tuesday. The Reds now trail the NL Central-leading Cardinals by 3½ games. The 17 hits are also the same number that St. Louis had in a 13-1 rout in the opener of the three game set.
