ARDMORE, Pa. — Four people broke into the headquarters of the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and stole a significant sum of cash, the group said Thursday.
The thieves broke into a second-floor window, apparently from the roof, and used tools to open a safe that held the proceeds from two recent events.
Alex Scott, who died at age 8, started selling lemonade in front of her home as a young girl to raise money for pediatric cancer research. The foundation, now run by her parents, has raised more than $6 million to date.
Security video shows four people in hooded shirts breaking into the relatively obscure Haverford Township office, the foundation said.
"I'd like to think if they're young, they didn't really understand what it means to take from charity ... and how important it is to people to know their money is going to where it's supposed to," said Liz Scott, Alex's mother and the foundation's vice president.
Tuesday marked the second anniversary of the 8-year-old's death from neuroblastoma. The break-in occurred sometime last weekend.
Haverford police are investigating the break-in. They suspect juveniles, Detective George Christake said.
MARIENVILLE, Pa. — Fire destroyed a kitchen cabinet factory that was the former site of a historic glass plant, but no injuries were reported. The fire at the National Forest Products factory, which formerly housed a Glass Container Corp. plant, started around 4 a.m. Thursday. The 68,000-square-foot building, which was vacant at the time, was gutted and most of the equipment and inventory destroyed, officials said.Marienville fire chief Bob Snyder said the fire was the worst to hit the town since the 1940s, and "the first real commercial fire," since most blazes are residential or brush fires. Fire officials had no immediate damage estimate. The original Glass Container Corp. factory opened in 1914 and became Forest County's largest employer before closing in 1982.
