Private colleges are not necessarily out of reach
Many times, college-bound students steer clear of pursuing a bachelor's degree at a private college because they believe cost will prevent them from enjoying the advantages found at a private institution.
But a little investigation may prove those students, as well as concerned parents, wrong.
A private education is something that can be affordable for everyone. Costs may even be comparable to a state-owned college or university in many cases.
"The cost of a La Roche College education continues to be well below the national average for private colleges and universities," said Tom Schaefer, associate vice president for academic affairs. "More importantly, the value of a La Roche education is well above average."
At La Roche, incoming students have the opportunity to work with financial aid counselors to determine their level of need. The average financial aid package is about $13,000 per student. The college provides several scholarship and aid opportunities, including the Trustee Scholarship, the Founders' Achievement Award and federal loans and grants.
Assistance like this can make a small, private college experience attainable for a student who may believe that cost would rule it out.
"We strive to provide a personalized education," Schaefer said. "That's something many larger schools are unable to provide."
Indeed, private colleges generally offer smaller class sizes, which mean a lower student-to-teacher ratio and more personal attention. Those benefits can make a big difference to incoming freshman or transfer students who need a little "TLC" because of their separation from familiar home life and activities.
"Having a faculty adviser who knows each student by name can make or break a college experience," Schaefer said.
La Roche offers more than 50 degrees in the School of the Arts & Sciences, School of the Professions and the School of Graduate Studies and Adult Education.
