Britsky gets past Davies for Late Model win

Late Model drivers Dutch Davies (40) and Alex Ferree battle in Turn Three during action at Lernerville Speedway Friday. Davies finished second in the feature behind winner John Britsky.

BUFFALO TWP — John Britsky knew he was running out of time.

The Indiana, Pa., resident needed just one chance to pass Dutch Davies of Warren, and that opportunity presented itself on the next-to-last lap of the Late Model feature at Lernerville Speedway Friday.

Britsky grabbed that chance and held off Davies to win the event.

"With about five or six laps to go, I didn't think I had much of a chance," said Britsky. "It seemed Dutch was a little tight in the middle. When he'd dive in to keep it, I think he started to guard the bottom. That made it pretty easy to go by."

In the 25-lap event, Davies took the lead from David Scott on lap 16 and held it until Britsky charged by with two laps remaining.

"We went a little soft on the rear," said Davies. "Once that happened I was in trouble."

"In traffic, you never know what you have until you get open," said Britsky, who won his first race at Lernerville this year and just his second overall here. The other was three years ago.

Scott led the first two laps before Alex Ferree came back and took the next nine. Scott regained the lead before Davies grabbed control in the 16th lap.

Ferree lost his advantage when he straddled the outside edge of the far straightaway but rebounded to finish a solid fourth.

"I got a little tight," said Ferree. "I went over the hill. I wanted to see what the grass looked like over there."

The race also had a special twist when Blackie Watt, 73, drove Jimmie Pitkavish's car. Pitkavish's father, Joe, was a longtime car owner who had Watt as his Late Model and Modified driver. The duo teamed up to win seven Lernerville titles.

Watt of New Alexandria finished 12th in the Late Model feature.

Friday night also served as the Joe Pitkavish Memorial Modified Race.

Watt's last win at Lernerville was in 1987, although he still competes in senior and bus races.

In the other three races, all the points leaders continued to add to their totals by pulling out victories.

• Ed Lynch Jr. won his fifth Sprint race at Lernerville this season, overtaking Arnie Kent of New Castle on lap 10 before pulling away.

It was Lynch's 82nd career Sprint win at Lernerville. He had a sizable lead, but a late caution helped to bump him further along.

"It hurts you or it helps you," said Lynch about the caution. "I don't know if I needed it, but you always run a chance when you're in traffic."

• Like Lynch, Kevin Bolland captured his fifth Modified win of the season at the track and his first Pitkavish Memorial title as well, claiming $2,050 in the process.

The New Brighton driver took over the lead halfway through the 25-lap race after Mark Flick of Apollo had held the lead since the second lap.

Rex King of Bristolville finished second and Flick was third.

"It's not easy starting back with all the competition here," said Bolland. "I learned a lot from Blackie Watt in those learning days."

Bolland who entered the night with a 33-point lead over Brian Swartzlander, knows there's still another month of racing before he can claim the points championship.

"It's a nice way to start the weekend," said Bolland. "It's was a nice incentive. ... I just want to take it one lap at a time and not get too ahead of myself."

• In the Pure Stock 15-lap feature, Butch Lambert of Mars grabbed his third win of the year and 17th at Lernerville by taking control late in the race and holding off Bob Lipinski of Dorseyville.

Notes: There were only 87 cars in the pits and there were no B-Main races. ... Next Friday, the World of Outlaws returns for Late Models as well as E-Mods. Fab Four racing is set for Aug. 11.
