Playoff arms race

Saxonburg pitcher Brandon Wissinger waits to tag out John Marra of East Butler at the plate during Tuesday's Butler County American Legion baseball playoff. Saxonburg was leading 11-10 when the game was suspended after the seventh inning because of darkness.
Teams deplete pitching in game halted by darkness

BUTLER TWP — Wanted: Pitcher, either right-handed or left-handed. Must be able to throw strikes and work well in a pressure situation. No experience required. Successful applicant should be able to get six outs at a minimum and lead his team to a Butler County American Legion Baseball Tournament title.

That's the ad East Butler manager Dess Schnur and Saxonburg manager Jim Bacon are placing.

Both need a pitcher — badly.

East Butler and Saxonburg used seven pitchers in seven innings Tuesday night to try to decide the winner-take-all game in the BCAL tournament. Once again, nothing was decided.

The game, whichSaxonburg leads 11-10, was suspended because of darkness after the seventh inning was concluded. The two teams — and whatever arms they can find — will conclude the game at 6 p.m. today at Highfield.

"It's disappointing we couldn't get it done today," Bacon said. "But we had the feeling early on (that it wasn't going to get finished today)."

That's because none of the seven pitchers were able to get a 1-2-3 inning. Each inning saw at least one run cross the plate.

Errors and misplays in the field haunted both teams and most of the pitchers. East Butler committed six errors and Saxonburg had two. Saxonburg's errors led to four runs.

"This is not typical," Schnur said. "This is not indicative of the way teams in this league played during the regular season. What's the reason? Who knows?"

Pitching is part of the reason. Both teams have exhausted most of their stable of arms and are searching desperately for someone — anyone — who can stop the bleeding.

It got so desperate for Schnur that he used Brad Cottage on the mound twice.

Cottage came into the game in the fifth inning and got two outs to end a Saxonburg threat, then was lifted in the sixth inning when three errors behind him got the big right-hander in trouble.

He returned to the mound in the seventh in relief of East Butler's fourth pitcher of the day, John Marra.

"Unfortunately, my three starters aren't available, aren't healthy enough to pitch," Schnur said of Dallas O'Donnell, Tim Geibel and Adam Gregory. "That has hurt us significantly."

Bacon also turned to three pitchers. Starter BrandonWissinger lasted two innings before Joe Arndt replaced him. Wissinger was charged with four runs on six hits.

Arndt struggled as well, surrendering four runs in just two innings.

Kevin Bacon, who started Monday's game, was the onlySaxonburg pitcher who was effective. The pitcher of record gave up two unearned runs in three innings and was still on the mound when the game was suspended.

"We'll have to see where he is (today)," Jim Bacon said. "We have some other arms we can turn to, like Zach Mayes."

Dan Pickard, who pitched 6Z\c innings of relief on Monday to get the win, also will be available for Saxonburg.

The game took on the same back-and-forth character as the one played on Monday.

After falling behind 8-4 after four innings,Saxonburg roared back with two runs in the fifth, thanks to a two-run single by Kevin Bacon, tacked on two more runs in the sixth thanks to three East Butler errors and three in the seven on anRBI triple by Justin Thompson and a two-run single by Pickard.

That helped Saxonburg overcome a defensive lapse in the top of the seventh inning when Justin Heller plated Ryan Geibel and himself on a sacrifice bunt that turned into a four-base throwing error.
