Mars' Winkle crashes Modified top 5 list

Other drivers have more financial support and more experience, but few drivers in the Modified class at Lernerville Speedway have been as consistent as Mars' Tom Winkle this season.

BUFFALO TWP — Take a look at the Modified points standings at Lernerville Speedway.

Somebody seems out of place.

Kevin Bolland and Brian Swartzlander, sitting 1-2 on that list, have combined for more than 60 feature wins here over the years. Dave Murdick and Jim Weller Jr., sitting 4-5 on the list, have combined for nearly 50 wins at the Sarver track.

Bolland is leading 2006 points races at Lernerville and Tri-City. Swartzlander, Murdick and Weller all have won points titles at Lernerville before. All four race consistently at other tracks as well.

So who's out of place?Tom Winkle, who enters Friday night's 40-lap BRPModified race here in third place in Lernerville points with 218.

The Mars driver of the No. 28 car has won seven career features at Lernerville, has never come close to a points championship and only races on Friday nights.

"For him to keep up with those guys, with a lesser budget and not as much seat time, shows what kind of driving skills Tom has,"said Mike Kalkowski, a Winkle crew member from Butler. "He's one of the most underrated drivers out here."

He's been one of the most consistent as well.

Winkle, 43, has finished among the top four in six of the eight features he's competed in this year. He finished ninth and 12th in the other two. He also has a feature win and two heat wins to his credit this season.

Only Bolland, with eight top-five finishes, four feature wins and three heat race victories, has been more consistent in the Modified division this season.

"Just running laps at one track helps you become consistent,"Winkle said. "You don't have to tinker with the set-up or the tires much and it saves on wear and tear on the car. I know it's helped me.

"We're getting a second car ready and we'll probably only run it at Tri-City for the same reason."

Winkle has been racing for 21 years. He broke into racing with his own car, then sold it after a number of years.

Larrel Smith helped work on Winkle's car. Once it was sold, Smith bought another car with the intent of Winkle racing it.

"That was the plan from the start,"Smith said. "Now we're pretty much 50-50 in terms of running the program.

"Tom's definitely underrated as a driver. We do this for fun. Truth is, he's one of the best drivers around."

Winkle doesn't plan to concern himself with the Modified points race.

"I'm more concerned with winning races," he said. "We're only winning once or twice a year, and that's not gonna get it done. I need to find victory lane a little more often."

One thing Winkle has been able to do is avoid mishaps on the track.

Keeping the car in one piece is as critical of a skill as any when it comes to consistent finishes.

"He knows how to avoid trouble, and that's important,"Kalkowski said. "But you have to be lucky, too. Things can happen on the track right in front of you and if there's no place to go, you're going to get caught up in it."

Winkle says he's been lucky when it comes to avoiding accidents, "but in this sport, that luck can change at any time."

For now, he's just happy to be among the top five in points with the more recognizable names.

"They're all great guys and they all have a lot more seat time than me,"Winkle said. "Yeah, I'm proud to be there with them."

Winkle has never won a points championship at any track.

"If we're still up there with a couple of weeks to go ... We may feel a little differently about the points race then,"Smith admitted.

Notes:The BRPModified feature Friday pays $2,000 to win. The other Fab Four divisions will also be in action. ... Rex King won last year's BRP race at Lernerville. Bolland has won three BRPraces here while Swartzlander has won two. The BRPModified Tour has raced annually at Lernerville since 1998.
