Charles W. Shaffer

Charles W. "Bill" Shaffer, 88, of Lisbon Road, Kennerdell, died at 1 p.m. Thursday at UPMC Northwest hospital, Seneca, Venango County.

Born July 7, 1917, on the family farm in Kennerdell, he was a son of Israel "Gus" and Dora Smith Shaffer.

He was a Methodist. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, his dogs, gardening and woodworking.

Mr. Shaffer had been employed at several sawmills and was a self-employed timberman. He also worked for Sportspal Canoes in Emlenton.

During World War II, he served with the Army Airborne Engineers.

He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Mark (Gladys D.) Fichte of Oakmont, Mrs. Frances Douglass of Jackson Center and Mrs. Michael (Billie Mae) Guiste of Emlenton; four sons, Frank L. and Robert A. Shaffer, both of Kennerdell, and Charles W. Jr. and Wade H. Shaffer Sr., both of Emlenton; a brother, Augustus "Bud" Shaffer of Kennerdell; and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Lottie) Healy of Clarion and Mary Morgan of Boyers.

He also is survived by 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces, nephews and cousins.

His wife, Aletha Mae Critchlow Shaffer, whom he married May 1, 1942, in Mercer, died Sept 1, 2002. He also was preceded in death by four brothers and a sister.

<B>SHAFFER</B> — Friends of Charles W. Shaffer, who died Thursday, May 25, 2006, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday at the <B>Hile Funeral Home</B>, 1204 Kerr Ave., Emlenton. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with Ken Hughes, a Methodist pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at the Shaffer family cemetery, Scrubgrass Township, Venango County.
