Man of Steel soars in video, DVD releases
The planet Krypton's most famous citizen is back next week as "Superman Returns" flies into movie theaters across the country. But the legendary Man of Steel has never really left us since his first appearance in Action Comics No. 1 back in 1938.
Created by Cleveland boyhood pals Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, Superman has enjoyed numerous "lives" in comic strips, radio, movies, television series and tons of merchandise.
Just to remind us of how long he has been around, Warner Home Video has released numerous examples of Superman on DVD.
• "Adventures of Superman: Season Three and Four" (1954, 1955, $39.98) — These are the seasons when the show switched to color. It might have been made in the 1950s, but the series remains a timeless and enjoyable treat. For baby Boomers, George Reeves remains the definitive TV Superman and Clark Kent. The flying sequences, done long before there was computer magic, still manage to thrill. The set includes 26 episodes. Seasons one and two are still available.
• "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman: Season Three" (1995-96, $59.98) — This series' key focus is on the developing romantic relationship between Lois Lane and Clark Kent, excellently played by Teri Hatcher and Dean Cain. Kent as Superman still found time to fight a variety of foes, including his archenemy, Lex Luthor. This is the season in which Clark finally weds Lois — or does he? The set includes 22 episodes. Seasons one and two are available.
• "Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman" (2006, $14.98) — An excellent and fascinating two-hour look at the history of the man of steel from comic books and radio to television and the movies, including some clips from the upcoming "Superman Returns."
• "Superboy: The Complete First Season" (1988-89, $39.98) — John Haymes Newton plays the title role in this interesting if less than spectacular syndicated show. The series picked up some pep in season two when Gerard Christopher replaced Newton. The set includes 26 episodes on four discs.
• "Superman: The Animated Series: Season Three" (1998-2000, $26.98) — A well-done cartoon version of the super legend. The set includes 18 episodes. Seasons one and two are still available.
Also available are the first four seasons of "Smallville"' ($59.98 each), with season five scheduled to be released Sept. 12, and seasons one and two of "Justice League" ($44.98 each), the animated series featuring Superman teamed up with Batman and other DC Comics heroes.
The four Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve are also still out there. The only things missing on DVD here are the two movie serials "Adventures of Superman" (1948) and "Atom Man vs. Superman" (1950) starring Kirk Alyn.
