Joseph V. Bonefeste, 84, of Springfield, Ill., died at 6:50 p.m. Tuesday at the Capitol Care Center, Springfield.

Born April 18, 1922, in Argentine, Washington Township, he was the son of Natale and Frances "Rose" Cacia Bonefeste.

He graduated from the University of Illinois and Illinois State University and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees.

He was a World War II Army veteran and received the American Theater Ribbon, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Battle Star, the A-P Theater Ribbon with two Bronze Battle Stars, one Overseas Service Bar and WWII Victory Medal.

Mr. Bonefeste had been an elementary school administrator for 34 years for the Greenview and Springfield District 186.

He was a member of St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, Springfield, where he sang in the choir and served on the finance committee. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 364, the AARP, American Legion Post 0032, the YMCA, the Springfield Symphony, the German Band, the University of Illinois Alumni Marching Band and the University of Illinois Alumni Association.

He was a past president of the Illinois Treasurers Association and the Roman Cultural Society and was a manager and member of the Springfield Municipal Band and played in several dance bands. He was the Sangamon County Treasurer for 20 years; and during real estate tax payment time, you could find him greeting everyone at the door with his friendly smile and warm handshake.His wife, Pat M. Petrilli Bonefeste, whom he married Feb. 9, 1946, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church, died Aug. 3, 1996.Surviving are two sons, Joseph and Jim Bonefeste, and two grandsons, Anthony and Adam Bonefeste, all of Springfield; a brother, Dominic and his wife, Ann, of Butler; two sisters, Catherine Cipollone and Mary Morando, both of Butler; and many nieces and nephews.

<B>BONEFESTE </B>— Friends of Joseph V. Bonefeste who died Tuesday, May 2, 2006, will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at <B>Kirlin-Egan and Butler Funeral Home</B>, 900 S. Sixth St., Springfield. Visitation will begin with a prayer service at 3 p.m. A funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church with the Rev. Richard Chiola as celebrant. Burial will follow at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, where the Interveterans Burial Detail of Sangamon County will conduct military honors.Memorial contributions may be made to St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church, 1020 N.
