Cool summer sandals not too difficult to make
You are probably excited that the soft summer breezes are finally here. But, just as we recently escaped the cold of winter, we are now looking for relief from the heat. And an enterprising Norton, Ohio, youngster is coming to the rescue.
Austin Rebeck, a sixth-grader, is cashing in on one of the hottest trends in female footwear. As owner of Austin's Fuzzy Flip Flops, Rebeck can help keep you cool and in style this summer.
Rebeck, 12, started the business about a year ago when his mother, Beverly, ordered a pair of decorated flip-flops on the Internet for his little sister, Lexie. He thought they looked pretty neat and asked for instructions to make a pair for a friend. Soon, a cottage industry was born.
His creations quickly became a popular item with teachers and girls at school. Although some of his friends thought it was a bit strange he made sandals for girls, it didn't take long for them to realize it's pretty cool to own a business, especially when the profits can be used to buy a new PlayStation.
You can place a made-to-order request by contacting Rebeck at www.beckneo.rr.com.
Follow these instructions to make your own. Directions are combined with the ones Rebeck supplied and those found at www.hobbylobby.com on the Web.
Supplies you will need• 1 pair of plain flip-flops• 1 skein polyester/acrylic yarn• Crochet hook• Glue• ScissorsUse the crochet hook to push the end of the yarn down through the back buttonhole of the flip-flop. Wrap the yarn around the button and place a small amount of glue in the buttonhole to secure. On the top, begin wrapping the yarn around the strap by making a chain of loops. Begin by bringing a loop of yarn under the strap. Hold the loop in place and bring the ball of yarn back over the top of the strap. Bring another loop through the first loop and pull the first loop tight. Take the yarn back under the strap pulling another loop through the second loop. Pull the second loop tight, keeping the yarn snug as possible. The tighter the loops, the fuzzier the flip-flops will be.Continue making loops until you get to the opposite buttonhole. Cut the yarn, push the end into the buttonhole, wrap and glue in place. Repeat with the other flip-flop.
