Moniteau senior pitcher/first baseman Sara Vinca was named Keystone Shortway Athletic Conference MVP Sunday night.
Vinca is hitting .689 with five home runs, six doubles, seven triples and 20 RBI this season for the Warriors, who earned the No. 1 seed for the District 9 playoffs.
Vinca is also 7-3 in the circle with a 3.36 ERA. She has fanned 96 hitters in 58 innings pitched.
Brandy Neff earned second team honors and Larissa Fowler and Martina Burk were both named to the third team for Moniteau.
Karns City outfielder Jessica Spafford was named to the first team. Samantha Bly was named to the second team for the Gremlins.
Mike Curran, a Butler native who is attending New Mexico Military Institute, was named to the District 4-3A baseball team inNew Mexico.Curran, a freshman third baseman, hit .378 to earn the honor.

CLEVELAND — The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled infielder Yurendell DeCaster from Triple-A Indianapolis on Sunday and placed outfielder Jose Bautista on the bereavement list.Bautista returned to his native Dominican Republic for the funeral of his grandmother. He is expected to rejoin the Pirates on Tuesday in Arizona for the second game of a three-game set against the Diamondbacks.The 25-year-old outfielder is batting .250 (9-for-36) with two homers and five RBIs in 10 games for the Pirates.DeCaster, who played for The Netherlands in the World Baseball Classic in March, hit .252 (37-for-147) with 11 doubles, four homers and 18 RBIs at Indianapolis.
BALTIMORE — Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro broke down at the start of the Preakness on Saturday, galloping only a few hundred yards when his right rear leg flared out and he veered sideways while his eight rivals passed him.The hushed crowd of more than 100,000 at Pimlico Race Course watched as jockey Edgar Prado pulled the colt to a stop and jumped off. With Barbaro still on the track and running on three legs, there wasn't much enthusiasm for the finish, especially with many of the fans in tears.Bernardini won the $1 million race, beating Sweetnorthernsaint by 5 1-4 lengths.Barbaro was diagnosed with a fracture above and below his ankle.Barbaro underwent more than five hours of surgery at the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center for Large Animals on Sunday to repair the broken bones. Dr. Dean Richardson said the horse calmly awoke from anesthesia and "practically jogged back to his stall" for something to eat.His survival is still 50-50.
