Col. Jerry Weiss, former commander of the 2-110th Mechanized Infantry of the Army National Guard in Butler, recently was named commander of the Maryland Wing of the Civil Air Patrol and was promoted to his current rank.Weiss, 57, who had been the wing's Group II commander, joined CAP in 1999.He served in the Army from 1968 to 1971 as an enlisted soldier and returned to active duty in 1978. He completed Officer Candidate School in 1981, was commissioned a second lieutenant and retired in 1995 as a lieutenant colonel after 20 years of active duty.After retirement, he led an Army JROTC battalion before moving into the corporate world as a chief operating officer. He works in the Operations Center, U.S. Army Research, Development and Engineering Command, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Md., where he manages the command's tasking system.In 1994, he received a master's degree from Boise State University, Idaho; and in 1975, he received a bachelor's degree with a teacher certificate from Allentown College, St. Francis de Sales in Pennsylvania. He also attended the Infantry Basic and Advanced courses and the Command and General Staff College.Weiss is a member of the U.S. Army Association, American Legion, Military Officer Association, Armed Forces Benefit Association, International Society of Performance Improvement, and American Society of Training Development. He is a life member of the Pennsylvania National Guard Association.Weiss and his wife, Maryanne, have four children and a granddaughter.
