Latrobe beats out Butler

Butler's Andy Strutt cleared 13 feet, 6 inches to win the boys pole vault, but Latrobe grabbed the second and third places to secure a 78-72 victory to conclude the WPIAL Class AAA Track and Field Team Championship at Slippery Rock University Tuesday.

The pole vault was not contested last Thursday at Norwin High School and was postponed again Monday due to inclement weather. The event was held indoors at Morrow Field House.

The Tornado needed to win the first two places to win. Latrobe, however, had two vaulters at 12-6 while Butler's Matt Feder equaled his season high at 12-0.

"Andy vaulted well and Matt did too. Twelve feet is good for Matt, but it wasn't quite enough," said Butler boys coach Rick Schontz.

Girls Lacrosse

Erin Bernhard and Desiree Palmieri each scored two goals, but the Seneca Valley girls lacrosse team fell to Sewickley Academy 15-5 in the first round of the WPIAL playoffs Tuesday.

Shannon Quail also scored for the Raiders, who ended their season at 10-5.

Kristin Rose won the 100-meter hurdles and 200 meters, but A-CValley's girls dropped a 122-28 decision to Clarion.
