Unqualified efforts

Jess Clouse of Butler turned in an effort of 9 feet, 3 inches in the pole vault at the Class AAA Track and Field Qualifier Tuesday that was good for second place and good for a spot in next week's WPIAL championships.
Plenty of records fall at AAA event

BUTLERTWP — The idea of doing just enough to advance to next week's WPIAL Track and Field Championships didn't apply at Tuesday's Class AAA Northern Qualifier at Butler High School.

School records and plenty of personal bests were reached by several Butler County athletes, who were not going to risk any chances of not making the WPIAL finals.

Among the highlights:

n Right off the bat, the Knoch boys 3,200-meter relay team of Brian Tackett, Ben Hutterer, Artie Black and Kyle Reeping shattered the school record with a time of 8 minutes, 4 seconds, besting the 1987 standard of 8:11.7.

"Their next goal is 8:02.4, the state qualifying time," said Knoch coach Wess Brahler. "That's definitely within reach."

• Seneca Valley's Da'Lynn Mills set the school mark in the girls 200 with a time of 24.86

"She's the first to ever run in the 24s," said Seneca Valley coach Wayne Roccia. "That's wonderful. I'm real excited about that."

Butler's Kendall Butch won three events: the pole vault (11 feet, ¼ inch), triple jump (35-7½) and the high jump (5-0, a seven-way tie with six others including Mills and Raiders teammates Jen Boyd and Chelsey Pavlick).

n Boyd also qualified in two other individual events, the long jump (second, 17-4) and the triple jump (third, 35-4¾) and was a member of the third-place 1,600-meter relay.

Other first-place performances in the girls qualifier came from Seneca Valley's Ashley Turici, who had a winning javelin throw of 130-3.

"We've asked her to throw the shot and discus from her during the regular season," said Roccia. "We needed that, but now that the season is over, the javelin's her ticket if she's going to make it.

"This is the best she's thrown at this time of the year,"Roccia added.

The Raiders' 3,200 relay team of Lauren Bezier, Aleisha Rees, Kelsey Sullivan and Emily Wolfarth also prevailed with a time of 9:50.1 (Mars was second, Butler fifth and Knoch seventh) while the Butler 400 relay team of Kelly Huth, Lyndsy Day, Haley Spinneweber and Lea Renwick also won with a time of 50.5.

"That's their best this season, and that's coming back after dropping the baton at Baldwin last Friday," said Butler girls coach Rod Harris

Butler's Amy Achesinski was the other double individual qualifier, placing fifth in the shot put and seventh in the discus.

On the boys side, Knoch had first-place showings from Kevin Flaherty in the 400 (50.7, tied with Seneca Valley's Dan Stanley) and Reeping in the 800 (2:00.0).

Butler's Matt Celestin (triple and long jumps), Nolan Brink (shot and discus), Doug Moran (100 and 200), Brian Burka (110 and 300 hurdles) and Seneca Valley's Tim Miles and Knoch's Bill Elliott (shot put and discus) also qualified in two individual events each.

Moran ran a fraction of a second under 10.8 in the 100, the best time by a Tornado since record-holder Nick Chiappini's 10.7 in 1999.

Despite the longer list of personal records, the idea still is to advance and run, throw and jump another day.

"There were no surprises," said Roccia. "I don't know if that's good or bad. We have some real, real, real good team athletes, but when you move through, the quality is better. That's the nature of it."
