Tough tumble
WEXFORD – Butler's offense came through time and time again.
Unfortunately for the Golden Tornado, the final half inning saw North Allegheny's players with the bats in their hands.
The Tigers entered the bottom of the seventh trailing Butler 11-10.
But two RBI singles after two outs gave NA a 12-11 victory in a crucial Section 1-AAAA contest, Wednesday at North Allegheny's field.
NA's Rick Raraigh singled home Geoff Lang to tie the game before Isaac Marx's line drive off Dallas O'Donnell plated Christian Totera with the winning run.
The Tigers prevailed despite surrendering 11 runs on 10 hits and committing five fielding errors.
"I really didn't know what to think," said Tigers' coach Tim Banner as he glanced at the scoreboard following the game. "As good of athletes that we have, I just can't believe some of the things that are going on."
Butler had plenty of missed opportunities of its own.
The Tornado held leads of 2-0, 7-3, 8-7, 10-9 and 11-10 before losing.
"Against a team like (North Allegheny), you never think it's over until it's over," said Butler coach Dave Florie.
Butler committed four errors, which led to four unearned runs.
"We're certainly not happy with the performance," added Florie. "But I've got to give credit to NA. Their kids hit the ball hard."
Butler managed to turn a 10-10 tie into an 11-10 lead without the aid of a base hit in the top of the seventh inning.
Joe Black walked to lead off the inning before courtesy runner Anthony Pinto reached second base on an errant pickoff throw and went to third base on a wild pitch.
Walks to Darren Blakely and Adam Miller loaded the bases and Pinto scored on Andy Onufrak's groundout.
NA reliever and eventual winning pitcher Kyle Smith got Jay McDonough to fly out, leaving runners on second and third base.
Following a 9-0 loss to Seneca Valley on April 26, the Tigers had scored 34 runs in three section games entering Wednesday.
That total is now up to 46 runs in NA's last four games.
"We were helped out by (four) Butler errors," said Banner. "But we've been hitting the ball decently the last few games. Hopefully, we can keep it going."
Blakely led Butler's offense with three hits, three runs scored and one batted in.
Lang and Dave Bergstrom both tallied three hits for NA, the latter hitting a solo home run over the left field fence that tied the game at 10 in the bottom of the sixth inning.
O'Donnell, who relieved starter Josh Marchinoski with two outs in the fourth inning, shouldered the defeat. He struck out two and walked two in three innings pitched.
Seneca Valley currently leads the section with a mark of 7-2. North Allegheny moves to 7-3 and Butler falls to third place at 6-3, 9-6 overall.
