Butler shuts out Foxes, 7-0
BUTLERTWP — Pitcher Josh Marchinoski didn't get rattled after giving up a leadoff double to open Butler's game against Fox Chapel Friday.
He only got stronger.
Marchinoski pitched out of the early jam and went on to strike out seven batters and scatter five hits in a complete-game effort as the Tornado blanked the Foxes 7-0 in a key Section 1 game at Highfield Park.
"He bounced back. He was resilient," said Butler coach Dave Florie on Marchinoski. "He doesn't want to come out"
Butler also benefitted from some timely two-out hitting, scoring its first four runs in that fashion.
Andy Onufrak's RBI single followed Adam Miller's two-out single and advancement to second base on an error.
In the second, Darren Blakely had an RBI single, then Aaron Ordy added a two-run single for a 4-0 Tornado lead.
Aiding Butler were three Fox Chapel errors in the first two frames. The Foxes finished with five errors.
"Certainly against a good team like Butler, it's tough to come back when you're down," said Foxes coach John Broderick. "You really make it hard on yourself.
"This game is about making plays and timely hitting and we didn't do that," Broderick added.
Butler (9-5, 6-2) added to its lead in the third inning when Jay McDonough belted a two-run homer over the left-field fence to give Butler a 6-0 lead.
The Foxes (10-3, 4-3) had an opportunity to jump back into the game when, with a runner at first and two outs, Marchinoski got a little wild. He walked Derek Planavsky, then hit Harley Miller with a pitch to load the bases.
He struck out John Hastings, however, to end the threat.
In the bottom of the fourth, after a leadoff walk to Rob Cochran, Broderick protested the game, citing Butler was using a different type of baseball.
"We'll ask the powers that be, but my understanding is we use the Wilson S-1010. That's what we've used and what we've seen the entire first half," said Broderick.
"They allow us any ball." Florie said. "It wasn't the S-1010. It's a Rawlings. (Former Butler athletic director) Tim O'Malley ordered the balls for us and he's only the head of the WPIAL."
Butler scored its final run of the game in that inning, a sacrifice fly by Ordy to drive in Cochran.
"The section will go down to the last week of the season," said Broderick. "It'll probably be a dogfight. "
"The kids were magnificent in the way they played the game," said Florie. "They reminded me this was our first shutout. To me, baseball's a 1-0 game. You win or lose. Seven, that's a cushion and I'm glad we got it."
Notes: Phil Russo, 11, a student at Center Township, tossed out the first pitch as a winner from a random drawing from the sale of Tornado spirit wear.
