Right off the bat

Karns City's Allyson Kepple hits the dirt at second base as Moniteau's Brandy Neff takes the throw Thursday in the Warriors' 7-4 win over the Gremlins.
Top 4 hitters push Moniteau past Gremlins

CHICORA — An offense that collects eight hits in a high school softball game isn't exactly setting the world on fire.

But Moniteau's first four hitters made the most of them.

Megan Campbell, Sara Vinca, Amber Neff and Martina Burk combined to record all eight of the Warriors' hits and to score six of the team's seven runs in a 7-4 victory at rival Karns City Thursday afternoon.

"That part of our order has been stroking the ball pretty good," said Moniteau coach Danny Hindman. "We moved Amber up to third in the order a few games ago and she has been doing well there."

The Warriors found themselves trailing 4-3 with two innings to play, but Neff led off the sixth inning with a bunt single before Burk doubled her home to tie the game.

A throwing error allowed Burk to put Moniteau up for good at 5-4.

The Warriors (9-4, 9-1) added two more in the top of the seventh when Campbell's triple plated Stephanie Bonzo before the former scored on another KC throwing error.

Burk, who struck out eight and walked two in the victory, allowed a single to KC's Allyson Kepple to lead off the bottom of the seventh. She then induced Samantha Pyle to line into a 6-3 double play and retired Samantha Bly on another lineout to end the game.

"Her strength is her location," Hindman said of Burk, who did not give up more than one hit in any inning. "She's got four different pitches and can change speeds well."

"For the first four innings, our hitters were behind on everything," said KC coach Mike Simpson. "Then, we started to get around on the pitches in the fifth, but most times they were hit right at somebody."

The Gremlins entered the bottom of the fifth down 3-2 and came out of it with a 4-3 edge.

After one out, Kepple walked and came home two batters later when Bly's single to center was misplayed.

A throwing error on the same play, which ended with the ball in Moniteau's bench area, allowed Bly to come home as well.

"I felt pretty confident at that point," said Simpson. "The key for us was to go out and get that important first out(the next half inning), which we couldn't get."

KC's Brandi Dunkle pitched well in defeat, striking out eight and walking one. Two of the seven runs she gave up were unearned.

The Warriors' first run of the game came in the first inning when Vinca scored on Amber Neff's groundout.

Vinca scored again in the fourth on a wild pitch before Burk singled to plate Neff.

KC's Kepple scored on a Moniteau fielding error in the bottom of the third, which tied the game at 1-all.

The Gremlins (4-6, 3-3) scored in the next inning when Dunkle's triple scored Haley Callihan.

Vinca finished with three hits for Moniteau.
