Girl wins WPIAL boys title
Quaker Valley junior Annie Houghton is on a historic streak.
Houghton became the first girl to win a PIAA District 7 boys tennis championship when she defeated Bishop Canevin's Peter Kaczmarek 6-1, 6-0 Wednesday to claim the WPIAL Class AA title at Shady Side Academy.
Houghton also is believed to be the first female to qualify for a PIAA boys tennis championship. The boys tennis championships will be held May 26 and 27 at the Hershey Racquet Club.
"If people want to say I'm a trendsetter, that's great," Houghton said. "But I didn't do this just to start a girl thing. I just took this opportunity to play because I was injured. It was just a situation I took advantage of."
Houghton won the WPIAL girls Class AA title as a freshman and sophomore, but missed the girls fall tennis season because of a knee injury. The WPIAL and PIAA have no rules that prohibit a girl from playing in the boys season if she did not participate in the girls season.
Houghton not only won the boys title, she did so easily, losing only seven games in her four matches. She and Kaczmarek are familiar with each other, as they trained together at the Pennsylvania Tennis Academy.
