Flaherty tops Dolan during special vote
PITTSBURGH — Shawn Flaherty, a Democrat and son of former Pittsburgh mayor Pete Flaherty, got slightly more than 50 percent of the vote in a special election Tuesday to replace Republican state Rep. Jeff Habay, according to unofficial returns.
Flaherty, 46, of Fox Chapel, polled 5,545 votes, or about 50.5 percent of those cast. Republican Mike Dolan, 26, of O'Hara, got 5,437 votes, or 49.5 percent, according to the Allegheny County Department of Elections.
Habay, 39, resigned his 30th District seat Feb. 8 after he was sentenced to six to 12 months in jail for using his office staff to do campaign work on state time.
The results must still be certified, a process that includes the votes being retabulated by county workers today. That is followed by a 20-day period during which the candidates can challenge the results.
The winner will complete Habay's term, which runs through the end of the year. .
