Mars' Glomb hurls perfect game

Knoch's Stephanie Fincher fires a pitch toward the plate Thursday in the Knights' 12-0 victory over Karns City.

At the start if the season, Monica Glomb was feeling ill.

She made Butler feel sick Thursday afternoon.

Glomb, in just her second game back from an illness that kept her out of the pitching circle for the first two games of the season, tossed a perfect game, striking out 13 in seven innings to lead Mars to a 8-0 road win over the Golden Tornado.

"Monica is the type of player who doesn't let a lot of things bother her," said Mars coach Michele Goodworth.

Kristin Scheller doubled, singled and drove in a run and Hannah Taggart and Brittany Berkopec each doubled for the Planets (2-2) to give Glomb, a junior, more than enough support.

Glomb has now struck out 23 hitters in 14 innings in her two games back. She has walked only one.

Glomb used a 59 mph fastball and an array of off-speed pitches to baffle the Butler hitters.

Last year as a sophomore, Glomb posted a 0.78 ERA, striking out 134 in 116 innings.

"I can't say enough about Monica," said Goodworth. "She probably pitches every day of the week (in the off-season). She really works hard at it."

Goodworth believes this is Glomb's first seven-inning perfect game as a Mars pitcher. She has thrown numerous no-hitters in her young career.

In other action:

• Tina Mangola had two hits, but the Seneca Valley bats were silenced by Riverside pitcher Kara Falk in a 1-0 loss.

• Sara Vinca homered and drove in three runs and Martina Burk gave up just one hit in five innings as Moniteau (3-2) clubbed East Forest 16-0.

• Jacque Kriley and Kelli Davis each drove home four runs and Allie Atwood scored three times as A-C Valley outlasted West Forest 13-10.
