Butler County's great daily newspaper

Arrival of spring means it is time to discard winter remnants

Monday's break in the prolonged cold, gray weather delivered the message that, yes, springlike weather is on Mother Nature's agenda.

And, with the arrival of the spring weather comes the realization of all the debris left behind by winter.

The challenge is for it to be removed as quickly as possible.

While municipal crews around the county no doubt will be springing into action in the days ahead clearing away winter's aftermath, businesses and residents across the county should do their part.

If everyone were to devote an hour or two cleaning up around their properties, the county would be in great shape in short order. Meanwhile, in the weeks ahead, various "Adopt a Highway" litter-pickup crews from various businesses and organizations will become more visible along sections of highway, helping to ease some of the burden that otherwise would fall upon the state Department of Transportation.

The City of Butler poses a significant challenge because of all of the streets and alleys that exist, but it should not be a prohibitive task, considering the number of people living in the city.

For the city, it's especially important for the business district to be spruced up as quickly as possible. That means merchants must pay attention to the cleanliness of windows and signs, as well as entranceways.

The bottom line is that this annual spring cleaning can be tackled effectively and without prolonged effort if everyone does his or her part.

If good weather dominates, winter's debris and grime should be gone by Easter weekend.

As warm weather continues, residents should assess what work their respective properties need. Even modest painting projects can work wonders, and disposal of unwanted items now piled on porches or in backyards also helps.

Prior to the arrival of summer's hot temperatures is a good time for exterior repairs.

It all boils down to pride in one's property and community. People of Butler County should commit to making 2006 notable in terms of improving the county's appearance.

Who knows what putting on a fresh face will accomplish.

With this year's Major League All-Star Game being played in Pittsburgh this summer, thousands of visitors will be converging on Western Pennsylvania, and some won't be limiting their visit to downtown Pittsburgh. It is not beyond possibility that someone traveling through Butler County as part of his Western Pennsylvania visit might like what he sees here and envision a business opportunity or decide to move for the quality of life offered here.

But even without any ripple effect from activities in Pittsburgh, the people here should take pride in what they have and work to make it better.

The start of spring is a good time to not only reflect on what needs to be done, but also getting busy accomplishing it. People with elderly or disabled neighbors or family members should offer to help them do what their physical condition prevents them from doing.

Weather-wise, Monday was the start of something good. And with some effort on everyone's part, spring can bring a fresh look to more than gardens and yards.
