CENTERTWP — Three people were injured, two seriously, Saturday night in a head-on crash that police believe may have been deliberately caused by one of the drivers.
The crash just after 9 p.m. closed Route 308 for about three hours as rescue workers treated the injured and later helped authorities clean up the wreckage.
State police accident reconstruction officers were to be at the crash site today to begin their investigation. No charges have been filed in the wreck as of this morning.
Police said Nathan Lowry, 23, of Butler was driving north in a 2004 Suzuki sedan when he crossed into the southbound lane and continued traveling north.
The car drove head-on into a southbound 1997 Ford pickup truck driven by Bradley Riemer, 25, of West Sunbury, trapping both drivers.
Michele Schnur, 20, of Cabot, a passenger in the full-size pickup, managed to get out of the vehicle on her own.
"It was a pretty violent collision,"said Rick Black, an assistant chief for the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department.
Firefighters used Hurst tools to cut through the wreckage of both vehicles and free the drivers.
Bad weather prevented medical helicopters from flying to the crash site so Lowry and Riemer were taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital. They were later transferred with unknown injuries to Pittsburgh hospitals.
Their conditions were not known this morning; however, police described the injuries as serious.
Schnur was treated for a leg injury at Butler Memorial Hospital and released, police said.
Cpl. Brad Misfud said the investigation continues and he would not say when or if charges would be filed.
He said alcohol is not suspected in the crash.
