Eric Crowley stood at a familiar spot on the podium.Crowley, a senior diver at Mars, finished second Saturday at the PIAA Class swimming and diving championships with 460.90 points.He finished second in the event last season behind Alaric Eby, who also won the event this year with a score of 478.15.Crowley has only been diving competitively for two years. He is a two-time WPIAL champion.Also Saturday during the Class AA swimming finals, Andrea McQueen of Freeport placed 13th in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1 minute, 8.38 seconds.She also placed 16th in the 100 freestyle with a time of 54.52 seconds.McQueen was the only area swimmer to place in the top 16.
Five Butler wrestlers qualified for the Pennsylvania Junior Wrestling State Tournament Saturday.Marino Quercio won the 14-and-under division at 212 pounds.Ryan Hannon placed second in the 10-and-under division at 105 pounds; Dakoda Collins was the runner-up in the 12-and-under division at 115 pounds; Cole Baxter also placed second in the 14-and-under division at 102 pounds; and Alex Miranda finished second in the 14-and-under division at 112 pounds.The five wrestlers will compete in the state tournament Friday and Saturday at the War Memorial in Johnstown.
Grove City College sophomore Caleb Courage became the school's first male swimmer to win a national championship Saturday night.Courage won the 100-meter freestyle in a school-record time of 44.51 seconds at the NCAADivision IIInational meet in Minneapolis.A five-time All-American in his career, Courage entered the finals as the top seed after swimming a 44.84 in the preliminaries.
