Duke hit hard in Bucs' 7-4 defeat
BRADENTON, Fla. — Casey Fossum threw three scoreless innings Sunday in a matchup of starting pitchers from Midway High School in Waco, Texas as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates 7-4.
Zach Duke (0-2), who was six years behind Fossum at Midway High, was tagged for six runs, five earned, and five hits in four innings in taking the loss. He had no walks or strikeouts.
Tampa Bay scored a run in the first off Duke as Julio Lugo had a one-out bunt single, took second on Ryan Doumit's passed ball, stole third and scored on Carl Crawford's ground out.
The Devil Rays then scored five runs in the fourth to make it 6-0 as Ty Wigginton, who was released by Pittsburgh last December, hit a two-run double.
