SRU alum association awards $5,000 in aide

SLIPPERY ROCK — The Slippery Rock University Alumni Association Scholarship and Awards Committee has elected to honor seven SRU students with more than $5,000 in scholarships for the upcoming academic year.

The move brings the overall total to nearly 360 scholarships awarded since 1973, distributing nearly $214,000.

Recipients will be recognized April 22 at the association's annual awards dinner set for 5 p.m. in the Russell Wright Alumni House and 6 p.m. in the University Club.

The $1,000 Maree McKay/Esther Smiley Scholarship went to Rachelle Scherer, a fine arts major from Grove City, and the $1,000 Madeline Farnen Scholarship for Education Majors went to Kara Obuszewski, a secondary education/elementary education major, from Erie, and Emily Watson, an elementary education major from Slippery Rock.

The $700 Carl and Norma Watson Laughner Scholarship went to Rachelle Sherere, a fine arts major from Grove City.

The $500 Maggie Meise Fellowship for Graduate Students went to Valerie Williams, an exercise science major from Beaver Falls, and the $500 Eisaman Alumni Scholarship for Sophomore Students went to Daniel Cannon, an environmental studies major from Westlake, Ohio. The $500 Hallie Dugan Smith Scholarship Award for Junior and Senior Education Majors went to Angela Greaser, an elementary education major from Williamsburg.

The Watson Family Scholarship will be awarded later in the semester.
