Day 17 of the Turin Olympics

Sunday, Feb. 26

STARS

Italy's Giorgio Di Centa used a powerful sprint through the final stretch of the 50km skate to win the final cross-country race — and his second gold medal — of the Winter Olympics. Di Centa finished in 2 hours, 6 minutes, 11.8 seconds, only eight-tenths of a second ahead of silver medalist Eugeni Dementiev of Russia.

Nicklas Lidstrom scored the game-winning goal as Sweden edged rival Finland 3-2 for the Olympic men's hockey gold medal. Sweden goalie Henrik Lundqvist, a rookie with the New York Rangers, turned aside 25 shots.

OLYMPIC RINGS

Canada's Cindy Klassen can recreate the five Olympic rings with her winning medals. The speedskater had the biggest haul of the Turin Games, winning one gold, two silver and two bronze. Short track speedskater Ahn Hyun-soo was the men's leader with four — three gold and one bronze.

BROKEN RECORDS

The record for 1,000 meters in men's short track speedskating was made to be broken. China's Li Ye set a record on Feb. 15 with a time of 1 minute, 27.048 seconds, breaking the old mark of 1:27.185 set by Canada's Mathieu Turcotte in 2002. On Feb. 18, American Rusty Smith broke Li's record, only to see Ahn Hyun-soo of South Korea eclipse that with a time of 1:26.739.

TOP ACHIEVERS

Germany and the United States again won the most medals at the Turin Olympics, while Canada and Austria had their best all-time showing. The Germans and Americans repeated their one-two finish from the 2002 Games, with Germany winning 29 medals and the Americans 25. Canada, the 2010 host country, bettered its 2002 haul of 17 with 24 in Turin. Austria collected 23 medals.

TURIN TALK

"That was a great goal by three great guys. It was a good fit for it to come down to that. They've been an example to younger Swedish guys for a long time, so it's great to see them do it." — Sweden's Daniel Sedin on Nicklas Lidstrom combining with fellow Swedish veterans Mats Sundin and Peter Forsberg on the goal that beat Finland 3-2 in the gold-medal game.
