Grass fire burns 20 acres

Firefighters battle a fire that burned twenty acres of grass Tuesday in Center Township after an unattended yard fire got out of control. Chief Mark Lauer of the Unionville/Center Township Volunteer Fire Department said the blaze began in a yard at 472 Jamisonville Road, owned by Winona Bartmas, and quickly spread to three other neighboring properties. Lauer said Bartmas had ignited a pile of wood products in her own yard, then left it unattended. Firefighters were called to the blaze by a neighbor on Baxter Lane about 12:38 p.m., according to the Butler County Communications Center. Unionville and Prospect firefighters fought the blaze with hoses and shovels for more than two hours. Lauer said the state Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, Division of Forestry, may file criminal charges against Bartmas, and the township will consider citing her with numerous violations, including negligent burning and risking a catastrophe.
