Mars wrestlers win three section crowns
It was a memorable weekend for the Mars wrestling team.
The Planets advanced seven wrestlers to the WPIAL Class AA championships — including three section champions — at the Section 3 tournament Saturday at Burgettstown High School.
Seniors Matt Perri (119 pounds), Dave Pisarcik (189) and Pete King (215) each came away with section crowns after sweeping their three respective matches.
Four other wrestlers: Luke Salter (103 pounds-third), Logan Giger (145-second), Marek Romatowski (152-third) and Matt Whittington (275-third) — also advanced.
"About a month ago, a set a goal for us to get seven wrestlers to the WPIAL finals," said Planets' coach Don Cooley. "We attained our goal and I couldn't be happier."
It is the first section championship for Perri, Pisarcik and King.
Pisarcik's section championship came with a pin of Burgettstown's Dan Conley in the final round.
His three wins over the weekend boost Pisarcik's unblemished record to 38-0, this coming while not being taken down at all so far this season.
"David is a pretty down-to-earth kid," said Cooley. "He doesn't let things go to his head.
"All champions are capable of coming back after scored upon, and I'm confident that if he needs to, David can do just that."
Perri and King both finished third at sectionals last season.
The former, who competed at 112 pounds a year ago, grabbed the 119 title Saturday with a major decision (13-1) over Carlynton's Corey Schall.
"Matt is wrestling as good as I've ever seen him wrestle right now," said Cooley. "He's peaking at the right time and everything is going well for him."
King's championship round bout concluded when he decisioned Fort Cherry's Matt Deveaney, 6-1.
"Pete was able to stay in control the entire day," said Cooley.
All seven wrestlers who advanced will next be in action at the WPIAL Class AA championships, which begin Friday at Charleroi High School.
Also placing, but not advancing for the Planets were Alex Kokkinakis (125 pounds-fourth) and Phil Armstrong (160-fourth). Summit Academy's Carl Smith finished the day in fourth place in the 215-pound competition.
Following are the seven advancing wrestlers' final match results from Saturday. Complete results from the first round on were not available.
