The
Butler Rotary Club in 2005 donated more than $6,500 to the Rotary Foundation to help fund the foundation's polio eradication efforts.Because of that club and other Rotary clubs' donation, Rotary International reports Egypt and Niger are off the list of countries with polio problems, and now only four polio-endemic countries remain in the world before polio is ended. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative said Egypt and Niger are no longer polio endemic since the virus that causes the disease has not been in either country for more than a year.Afghanistan, India, Nigeria, and Pakistan are the only countries that have not stopped polio transmission. The initiative's spearheading partners are Rotary International, the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and UNICEF.For information, contact Peter Richdale, Rotary Club secretary, at 724-482-2916.
