SCHOLASTIC NOTEBOOK

One of the state's top high school track-and-field athletes has changed schools for the second time in her career.

Liz Kearins, the 2004 PIAA Class AAA 800-meter champion as a freshman at Central Bucks West, has transferred back to CB West after spending her sophomore season and part of her junior season at Gwynedd Mercy Academy.

Kearins was unable to repeat her gold medal in the 800 last year, losing to freshman Benita Taylor of Engineering & Science High School in Philadelphia.

Kearins did run a leg on Gwynedd Mercy's state championship 3,200-meter relay team. She also finished 19th in the 2005 PIAA Class AA cross country championships last fall.

"I talked to her parents last week," CB West principal J. Kevin Munnelly said. "They just said Liz felt she'd be happier here. Unless I have a reason to see otherwise, I'm happy she's happier. That's all. That's the bottom line."

Kearins did not attend Central Bucks West High School when she won her 2004 PIAA championship; she was still a student at Lenape Middle School, one of CB West's feeder schools.

Easton's swimming team is taking late practices to an extreme.A boiler that heated Easton's pool broke a month ago and has yet to be repaired. The Red Rovers swimmers have been practicing at Lafayette College or the Easton YMCA between 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. But when commitments at both sites tied up those time slots, Easton swimmers spent a week practicing at Lafayette beginning at 10 p.m."It's hard enough with swimming right after school," Easton co-captain Seth Phillips said. "I go to bed to bed around midnight. It's tough to adjust, and you have to have that drive."Shiloh Page, who will swim for the University of Vermont next year, said: "We're just trying to get through the season now.
