Onboard with the Steelers Writers, coaches pick

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger, seen here with the Steelers during their team photo session Tuesday, was selected by the majority responding to an informal Butler Eagle poll as the likely MVP of Super Bowl XL.
Pittsburgh to win, Big Ben to rule

So what if no sixth seed has ever won the Super Bowl?

The feeling among the Butler Eagle sports staff and Butler County football coaches is that will soon change.

Everyone seems to believe the Steelers will prevail on Sunday, primarily because of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger's hot hand.

"He's the real deal and he's playing with so much confidence right now," Butler coach Garry Cathell said. "Quarterback is the position where you want your most confident player and the Steelers have that.

"Ben Roethlisberger is the difference in that team right now."

Cathell sees a 34-21 victory with Roethlisberger as the game's MVP.

Knoch coach Mike King, Slippery Rock High School coach Clyde Conti and Freeport coach Bill Dillen all see Roethlisberger snaring MVP honors as well.

"The guy is unstoppable at this point," King said. "He found his groove at the right time.

"It's like a 3-point shooter in basketball. There's a certain comfort zone, and Roethlisberger's found it."

While King sees a 21-14 Steelers win, Conti sees the game even closer, at 20-17.

"The Seahawks' defense can run and they're very good," Conti said. "I'm concerned about their quarterback, too, because he's quite an athlete.

"A big play on special teams, positive or negative, may decide this game. But the quarterback of the winning team is usually the MVP."

Dillen wouldn't predict a final score, but said the Steelers should win by seven.

"It's a big hype game and the NFC team usually rises up and keeps it close," Dillen said. "But, ultimately, the difference will be Roethlisberger."

Eagle sports writers Perry Myers and Sam Tallarico also see Roethlisberger as the MVP. Myers calls for a 31-21 Steelers win while Tallarico likes a 31-17 count.

Slippery Rock University coach George Mihalik and Seneca Valley mentor Ron Butschle both see Jerome Bettis winning MVP honors.

Mihalik predicts the Steelers will win, 24-13. Butschle opts for a 28-7 verdict.

"The Steelers have such chemistry and teamwork going for them," Mihalik said. "Every coach wants that. Roethlisberger is providing leadership, but if Bettis has any kind of game, he'll be the MVP.

"Seattle's a good team, but Pittsburgh is clicking on all cylinders. They've got the attitude that they won't be beaten."

Eagle sports writer Mike Kilroy sees the Steelers winning by a 25-22 margin, with Bettis the MVP.

Moniteau coach Steve Wilson is calling for a 30-20 Steelers victory with safety Troy Polamalu grabbing MVP honors.

"That guy is all over the field," Wilson said. "I can picture him making the game-turning plays."

Eagle sports writer Derek Pyda calls for a 27-20 Pittsburgh triumph with Hines Ward as the game's MVP.

As for myself, I'm predicting a 27-17 Steelers win with Willie Parker being named MVP.

Parker is the least-recognized 1,200-yard rusher in Super Bowl history and he's due for another big performance.
